CARLINVILLE, IL – Blackburn College Softball hosted Westminster College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Tuesday.
In the opener, the teams battled in a pitcher's dual as freshman Taylor Weber allowed just three hits in a complete game effort. The teams were tied through the first four innings before the Blue Jays were able to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Offensively, BC's freshmen Alexis Weber and Kharma Giles both were able to get a stolen base but the Beavers were unable to get across the plate as they fell 1-0.
Westminster managed to score the first run in the second game and held a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third, but Blackburn answered. Senior Brianna Melchor walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. Junior Kailynn Kruep followed with a double to score Melchor which tied the game. After Kruep stole third, senior Zoe Mitchell knocked her in to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. The BC defense allowed just two baserunners the rest of the game to capture the 2-1 victory and their first win of the conference season. In the circle, senior Michelle Hollon allowed just four hits while striking out three in a complete game.
The team will return to action Thursday, April 9 when they host Webster University in another SLIAC doubleheader.
