Beavers Collect Third-Straight Split to Open Season
GLENWOOD, IL -- Blackburn College Softball collected their third-straight split to open the season as they took on Lawrence University where they won the first game 6-4 before dropping the second game 7-5.

CHATHAM, IL -- Blackburn College Softball collected their third-straight split to open the season as they took on Lawrence University where they won the first game 6-4 before dropping the second game 7-5.
Junior Kenadee Frey led the Blackburn squad with five hits and three runs batted in. She also scored a run. Seniors Zoe Mitchell and Breana Allen both had two hits. Senior Sierra Hiser and freshman Hunter Kirk posted two RBI's.
With two outs in the first inning, junior Kailynn Kruep was hit by a pitch then moved to second on a single by Frey. Senior Caroline Gibson followed with a single to score Kruep and give BC the 1-0 lead. Blackburn added another run in the third. Freshman Alexis Weber walked then stole second. After advancing to third, Frey singled again which scored Weber to put the Beavers ahead 2-0.
The team added four more in the fifth. Freshman Taryn Millburg singled and Kruep walked to put two on. Frey singled a third time to score Millburg. Gibson walked again before sophomore Mailee Schoen knocked in Kruep and Kirk followed with a double to score Gibson and Frey and made the score 6-0.
Lawrence narrowed the lead with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh but Blackburn held on for the 6-4 victory.
In the second game, the Beavers got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Mitchell and Addison Ruyle got on base before freshman Kharma Giles singled to left to score Mitchell.
Lawrence answered with three runs in the third but BC responsed with four runs in the fourth. Ruyle walked and Giles got on through an error. After a ground out helped the pair move to second and third, Hiser tripled to score Ruyle and Giles. Hiser then scored off freshman Taylor Weber's single, and Weber scored on a Frey single to make the score 5-3.
However, the guests managed to score one in the fifth and added three more in the sixth which proved to much to overcome to give Lawrence the 7-5 victory.
With the split, the Beavers are now 3-3 on the season and will next head to Florida for their Spring Break trip. The week begins with the team taking on Buena Vista University and Curry College Monday.
