LOUISVILLE, KY -- Blackburn College Men's Soccer visited Spalding University for a matchup of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes and scored two goals late in the first half, but it would not be enough as they fell 3-2.
Spalding took a lead early with a penalty kick goal followed by two plays where they were able to take advantage of possession changes deep in Blackburn defensive territory to go ahead 3-0.
The Beavers got on the board in the 28th minutes. Freshman Adrian Castillo stole the ball from Spalding near midfield and passed it to freshman Nathan Soto. After the pass Castillo moved up field past the Spalding defender while Soto took possession. After a couple touches, Soto lofted the ball up over the Spalding defense and Castillo was able to flip the pass right over the Golden Eagle goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. It was Soto's fifth assist this year.
Blackburn narrowed the gap right before half with a goal in the 42nd minute. Freshman Axel Gutierrez beat a Golden Eagle defender to a loose ball just outside the box and booted it up into the top right corner of the net, placing it just out of reach of a diving Spalding goalkeeper for his second of the season.
Blackburn outshot Spalding 22-16, including a 15-10 advantage in the second half, but were unable to find the net again as they ultimately fell 3-2.
Soto and sophomore Brayden Smith led the offensive attack with five shots each. Sophomore Cristian Cazares added three shots.
The Beavers return to action Saturday when they host Lyon College in another SLIAC matchup.
