CARLINVILLE, IL -- Blackburn College Volleyball celebrated their seniors prior to their match against St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Spalding University and then defeated the Golden Eagles 3-2 to highlight the night.
Before the match, seniors Zoe Mitchell, Becca Benoit, Payton Moeglin and Ella Person were honored for their efforts toward the program.
In the match, Blackburn won the first set 25-17 but Spalding followed by taking the next two sets. In the fourth set, BC tied it 2-2 by winning the set 25-20. In the fifth set, the Beavers jumped out to an 8-2 advantage when the teams switched sides and managed to hold on to win the match 3-2.
Sophomore Rean Ward led the Blackburn offense with 15 kills. Sophomore Rylea Black had 11 and Person posted 10. Junior Kenadee Frey tallied 44 assists in the match.
Freshman Marissa Perez finished the match with six aces.
Defensively, freshman Elexus Frey had a team best 24 digs while K. Frey had 16. Moeglin recorded 13 with Perez getting 11. At the net, Mitchell led the way with six block assists.
The team then took on Mississippi University for Women on Sunday and won the first set 25-23 but dropped the next three sets to fall 3-1.
Black led the offense against the Owls by recording 13 kills with Mitchell adding 11. K. Frey posted 36 assists.
E. Frey had again led the defense with 17 digs and K. Frey had 16. Moeglin and Ward tallied 12 with Perez getting 10.
The Beavers end with the weekend with a 5-5 SLIAC record and are currently third in the league. Blackburn returns to action Wednesday with a nonconference matchup at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy. They return to SLIAC play November 1 with a tri-match at Greenville College against Greenville and Lyon College.
