Blackburn Opens Season at IC Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, IL – The Blackburn College Volleyball team opened the 2024 season by taking on Illinois College and Dominican University Saturday at the Illinois College Invitational. The Beavers fell to IC 3-0 in the opener before falling to Dominican in five set.

JACKSONVILLE, IL – The Blackburn College Volleyball team opened the 2024 season by taking on Illinois College and Dominican University Saturday at the Illinois College Invitational. The Beavers fell to IC 3-0 in the opener before falling to Dominican in five set.
The offensive attack was led by senior Cara Pence with 23 kills and a .328 hitting percentage. Junior Payton Moeglin added 13 on the day.
Sophomore Kenadee Frey finished with 31 assists and paced the squad with eight aces. Junior Abygail Sobczak chipped in with 17 assists.
Sophomore Bailey Bennett led the defense with 27 digs, including a career high 20 against Dominican. Pence added 19 total, while Frey had 16 and Moeglin notched 12. Senior Jessica Muckensturm tallied three blocks.
In the opener with IC, the hosts captured the first two sets 25-15 and 25-11. Blackburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the third set but were unable to hold on before dropping the set 25-22 to give IC a 3-0 match victory.
Against Dominican, Blackburn dropped the first set 25-18 but bounced back and captured the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-20. The fourth set saw the closest set of the match, but Dominican was able to take a 25-23 set win. The fifth set was tied 6-6 but Dominican managed to go on a 9-3 run which gave them the 15-9 win and a 3-2 match victory.
Blackburn will return to action Saturday, September 7 as they head to Chicago for the Concordia University Chicago Quad match where they will take on Concordia Chicago and Wilkes University.
