CARLINVILLE, IL — The Blackburn Men's Basketball team went possession-for-possession with Greenville in a high-tempo battle but came up just short, 123-119.
The Beavers were well-rounded, with six players scoring in double figures. Freshman Jaylen Jeter led the way with 29 points, nine rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Freshman Evan Jordan was not far behind, adding 25 points, four rebounds, and six assists. Senior Darius Duff, in his final home game, recorded 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Juniors Payton Cook, Kamerin Carter, and KCion Welch each contributed 13 points.
Blackburn set the tone early with defensive pressure and paint touches. Cook established his presence inside with rebounds and a key block, and Jordan pushed the tempo off defensive stops to help the Beavers jump out to an early lead. Carter attacked downhill to keep the offense balanced, and Jeter knocked down a three-pointer to stretch the advantage.
Midway through the first half, Greenville responded, but Blackburn answered with execution on both ends. Jeter connected from deep during a crucial stretch, and senior Darius Duff provided a spark with a strong finish at the rim to stop a run. Defensively, Jordan, senior Owen Walter, and junior KCion Welch came up with timely steals and contested shots that turned into transition opportunities. A late free-throw sequence capped the half as Blackburn carried a 61–61 tie into the break.
The Beavers opened the second half with renewed energy. Welch threw down a momentum-shifting dunk, and Jordan followed with a transition layup after a defensive stop. Carter continued to steady the offense with smart possessions and efficient scoring, while Cook controlled the boards to limit second-chance opportunities.
Throughout the second half, Blackburn relied on balanced scoring and collective defense. Jeter added another perimeter basket during a key stretch, Duff attacked the rim to draw contact, and Welch protected the paint with strong interior defense. Though the game remained tight, the Beavers continued to compete on every possession, using defensive intensity, rebounding, and transition play to keep pace in a hard-fought conference battle before ultimately falling, 123–119.
The Beavers finished the regular conference season 8–8 and hold a 9–16 overall record. They are headed back to the SLIAC Conference Tournament after a three-season hiatus, last appearing in 2022 when they won the conference championship. They will finish as either the fifth or sixth seed in the tournament and are determined to make their way back to the championship game. Final seeding and matchups will be announced once all teams have completed conference play.
