MONMOUTH, IL — The Blackburn College men's basketball team faced Monmouth College in a non-conference matchup. The Beavers fell to the Scots, 76–66.
Blackburn was led by junior Kamerin Carter and freshmen Evan Jordan and Jaylen Jeter. Junior Payton Cook led the Beavers on the boards with nine rebounds and added 11 points. Carter led all Blackburn scorers with 13 points, three assists, and two steals. Jordan followed with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Jeter and Cook each contributed 11 points.
Blackburn came out aggressive on both ends but couldn't keep with the Scots, falling 76–66 to Monmouth (IL) after a back-and-forth first half and a decisive late push by the home team.
The Beavers struck first from the perimeter, with Carter and Cook knocking down early three-pointers to give Blackburn a quick lead. Cook was especially active early, scoring inside and out while also protecting the rim, as Blackburn built a 6–2 advantage and later stretched it to 10–9 midway through the opening half.
Blackburn's best stretch of the first half came when the ball moved freely and the defense forced turnovers. Junior Camden Nelson hit a fast-break three, Jeter finished at the rim, and senior Darius Duff added transition buckets to push the lead to as many as nine at 24–15. The Beavers controlled the glass during that run, getting second-chance points from Cook and strong defensive rebounds from Jordan.
Monmouth responded late in the half, capitalizing on free throws and offensive rebounds to keep pace. Despite a late three-pointer from Jeter and a layup just before the horn, Blackburn went into halftime trailing narrowly, 34–33.
Blackburn opened the second half with renewed energy. Cook drilled another three, Duff scored inside off a Carter assist, and Carter buried a triple to give Blackburn a 42–34 lead early in the period. Carter's playmaking and scoring helped keep the Beavers in front, while junior Kcion Welch added a strong finish in the paint.
Blackburn struggled to finish around the rim during that stretch, and Monmouth used second-chance points and transition scores to take the lead for good. Even so, Blackburn continued to fight—Jordan scored inside, Duff and Welch chipped in at the line, and Carter added another tough jumper to keep the margin within striking distance.
Down the stretch, Monmouth pulled away. Blackburn had chances late, including fast-break opportunities and offensive rebounds, but couldn't fully capitalize. A final layup by Jordan in the closing seconds set the final score at 76–66.
The Blackburn men's basketball team returns to action on December 20 at Illinois College.
