Blackburn College Sophomore Righthander Brady Wilkinson pitched a four-hit gem as the Beavers defeated Monmouth College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Monmouth. Wilkinson allowed an unearned run in the first inning before shutting out the Scots the rest of the afternoon.
Blackburn trailed 1-0 in the sixth before J.P. Hobbs led off with a single, Brandon Smith bunted him over to second and Shane Lewis singled to tie the game. It stayed 1-1 until the 9th inning when after an out, Lewis singled to right-center. Tyler Durand then executed a perfect hit and run single to put runners on the corners with one out. After a pitching change A.J. Gill singled in Lewis to make it 2-1 Blackburn. Walter Jarvis then added a two out RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1. Wilkinson closed it out in the 9th to improve to 1-1 on the season.
"Brady was outstanding, he commanded his curveball extremely well and had them out on their frontside all afternoon," said Blackburn Coach Mike Neal. "Brady gave us a tremendous lift today as we had been struggling to play good baseball, he kept his defense on its toes all day," added Neal.
Blackburn played errorless baseball and improves to 4-13 on the season while Monmouth falls to 4-7.
