Tyler Durand set a new school record for hits in a game with six as the Blackburn College Baseball Team escaped with a 9-8 victory over Lincoln Christian University in eleven innings on Tuesday afternoon in Carlinville.
Durand, a junior first baseman from Mt. Zion, had five singles and a double on the afternoon and scored the winning run after leading off the bottom of the eleventh with a single.
Kyler Sherrill, making his first collegiate start for Blackburn, pitched the first three innings and allowed six run on four hits. The Beavers fell behind 6-1 in the third inning before coming back. Blackburn scored two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single from Durand. Sammy Gordon relieved Sherrill and pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing just one earned run. The Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by J.P. Hobbs who was 3 for 4 on the day.
Lincoln Christian plated single runs in the 7th and 8th innings, before the Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the 8th inning on another two-run single by Durand.
Lincoln Christian threatened in the 10th inning loading the bases but Dillon Hensley came on and got a strikeout to end the threat. Hensley piched an inning and 2/3's to pick up his first victory of the season. The Blackburn hitters struggled all day as they struck out 13 times.
The Beavers won it in the 11th after Durand Singled, Joey Szerletich walked, Gregorio Costilla laid down a bunt and Durand beat the throw to third base and later scored on a fielders choice off the bat of A.J. Gill as the throw to the plate sailed over the catchers head for an error.
Blackburn is scheduled to be back on the field tomorrow afternoon for a conference doubleheader against MacMurray College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
